Courses I teach:

WOMEN CROSS-CULTURALLY, ANTHROPOLOGY 3737.
A gender-bending, gently humanist, profoundly global course which uses as a
text - A WORLD FULL OF WOMEN - and includes students of all ages, sexual inclinations,
or intellectual/social concerns. Part of the undergraduate Major in Women's
Studies.


QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS, ANTHROPOLOGY 4070.

A participatory hands-on seminar in how to do good (sometimes even great)
social science research. Students produce a finished proposal for a thesis,
dissertation, or grant application. It is required for the Master's degree program with the
College of Urban and Public Affairs, and fulfills the Qualitative Methods course for the PHD in Urban
Studies. This course is also cross-listed with Research Methods in Feminist Scholarship-Women's
Studies 4078.


PEOPLES AND CULTURES OF THE PACIFIC, ANTHROPOLOGY 3370.

A broad overview of Pacific Island societies-environments and social
lives-with an emphasis on the forces of colonialism, globalism, and capitalism at work in
the region; with one one small-scale intensive, applied example of a specific island-Pohnpei,
Micronesia. Counts as an area course in the Anthropology curriculum and in the Asian Studies
Minor.


MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, 4761

A cross-cultural investigation of the diseases, illnesses, sicknesses and
health of both individual bodies and the social body.


LANGUAGE AND CULTURE, ANTHROPOLOGY 4565

A survey of linguistics, socio-linguistics, the structure of language, the
biology of human language, the history of languages, and some compelling and controversial
research on power, primates, child language, and social dialects.
