Degree Programs

UNO’s anthropology program is committed to and engaged in the rebuilding of New Orleans in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The anthropology program, long designed to take advantage of New Orleans' and southern Louisiana's cultural and historic resources, provides students with the opportunity and tools with which to participate in this process.

The undergraduate curriculum is organized around applied urban anthropology and prepares students for careers in research and policy or for graduate work in anthropology and related fields.

The department offers an MS in Urban Studies with an applied urban anthropology focus through UNO's School of Urban and Regional Studies.

Training in research methods and fieldwork experience is an essential part of UNO's undergraduate and graduate programs. These include opportunities to participate in historic archaeology projects in New Orleans, urban planning and policy research, historic preservation and cultural conservation programs, Louisiana folklore studies, forensic anthropology workshops and internship programs.

An intensive summer ethnographic field school is offered at Brunnenberg, South Tirol, Italy. UNO offers a wide variety of other international study programs as well, including Costa Rica, Belize/Guatemala, Czech Republic, Spain, France, Central and Eastern Europe.
