ANTHROPOLOGY is the study of human culture, society, and history.  Why would you major in anything else?

Here are a few more good reasons to become an anthropology major at UNO.

1. Be international!  We will introduce you to the world’s full range of cultural diversity.  Why do people think and behave the way they do?  Join us and find out.

2. Be local!  UNO anthropology is uniquely positioned to be THE urban and applied anthropology program of the Gulf South.  We can provide you with tools to think about New Orleans and the region’s cultural and historical distinctiveness.  We can provide you with the tools to participate in the preservation and rebuilding of that distinctiveness!

3. Get an interesting job. With a BA in anthropology you will be prepared to rapidly understand and adapt to new situations.  You will draw on cross-cultural knowledge and you will be ready to think about how and why things happen the way they do.  You will be a more creative worker.  If you get a Masters or PhD, you will be prepared for careers in academia, government, nonprofits, museums, politics, market research, product development, advertising, public relations, film, etc.  The possibilities are endless!

4. Do real research. As an undergraduate anthropology major, you will learn real research skills and you will use them in your classes.

5. Meet fascinating people.  Through your classes, readings, and research you will meet a wide range of people and they will challenge the way you think differently about the world.  Or maybe just provide you with an opportunity to try something new to eat or drink.  Either way, you will never be the same.

6. Work with great faculty.  The UNO anthropology faculty are all active scholars who have engaged in research around the world—South America, the Caribbean, Europe, the South Pacific—and who are also engaged in research and writing about New Orleans.  They are great teachers who strive to bring students into their research.  And we are modest too.

7. Be ready to travel.  Anthropology prepares you for the diversity of the world. Once you have studied anthropology, you will be ready to go and seek out that diversity.

8. Have everything you believe challenged.  Yes, we will do that for you at no extra cost.  That is one of the main benefits of cross-cultural study.  Maybe you will decide you were right all along.  Maybe not.

9. Be a better conversationalist at parties.  With all the great stuff you will learn in anthropology, you will be more popular than you can imagine.  Really!

10. Kurt Vonnegut studied anthropology.  Could there be a better endorsement?
